Recycling your Christmas Tree

Christmas has come and gone, and it’s time to put the decorations away for the year. Did you put up a fresh tree this year? If so, rather than taking it to the curb for the garbage service, consider using it in your garden for the winter.

My fraser fir has been placed in the garden near the bird feeders, left upright, for the birds to enjoy. They will use it for shelter and ultimately, I’ll get some suet hung in it, and even some orange halves, so they can feast while in it.

Or, cut all the branches off of your tree and use them for cover in your perennial garden. Although much of Minnesota has already gotten a great protective layer of snow, you may find a windblown area of the perennial garden that would benefit from some type of cover, and if you didn’t get the hay or straw down in November, you can use evergreen branches in much the same way. Layer the branches up to 12-20” in height for some extra added protection over newly planted, or tender perennials
