It’s Peony Time!

The peonies are blooming here in the Twin Cities and they are a sight to behold! This is such an easy perennial to grow, and they are quite long lived as well.

Peonies are best grown in full sun sites, meaning that they need a minimum of six hours per day of full sunlight. They like evenly moist, well-drained soils.

You are probably most familiar with the double flowering peony, which has many flower petals per flower. There are, though, single types, like the photograph which is a cultivar called ‘Coral ‘n Gold’. There are also a new breed of peonies available, called Itoh hybrids, which were a cross between the double peony and a tree peony. There are some exciting yellow flowering types in the Itoh hybrids.

Probably the most important thing to remember when planting a peony is planting depth. When you buy a bareroot peony in the spring or fall, it is easy to see where the ‘eyes’ are located on the knobby, woody root you buy. That ‘eye’ must be 1” below the soil level. Right now, you could go to your neighborhood garden center and buy a container-grown peony. When you plant that peony, make sure you plant it at the same level it is in the pot, do not plant it any deeper or higher than it is in the pot. You’ll also be able to see many of these peonies flowering right in those pots, and you’ll have a lot of fun picking out just the right colors you want.

And don’t forget to stop and smell the peonies! Their fragrance is lovely.
