Berry Nice!

The weather is cooling down, and we are not far from fall leaf color season. Before the leaves fall, there is already a whole season of color happening, and that is with the fruits and berries on our trees and shrubs in the landscape.

Check out the flowering crabapples. So many have small dime sized red fruit right now and in such profusion! They really add color to the landscape. (There are actually a few that have bright yellow fruit too)

The Viburnums, or cranberrybushes, also have great berry color, which will vary depending on which species or variety you grow. Some have clusters of red luscious berries, which will really draw the birds to your landscape. Some have berries that are ripening from a dark purple to an almost black in color. If you are into watching the birds, you really should have a Viburnum in your yard.

Bittersweet vines are starting to color up. The branches are great for cutting and drying and using in fall arrangements indoors. The fruit is a bright orange color. There is a great new variety of bittersweet on the market, developed locally by Bailey Nurseries. It is called First Editions® Autumn Revolution, and it has berries that are almost twice as big as the species. It has both sexes on the same plant, so it will always form fruit.
